The Interview

Q1: Do you remember what you were doing when you heard Break the Cycle sold 700,000 copies in its first week?

Aaron Lewis: It was actually 716,000. Yeah -- I was in the middle of a round of golf in Virginia. I went from the golf course to the mall and I bought a Rolex as a gift to myself. I have since given that Rolex to my dad.

Q2: Who are your musical heroes?

Aaron Lewis: Everything from Zeppelin and Sabbath to James Taylor and CSN. Then this amazing thing came out of Seattle -- Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and STP and Alice in Chains. They completely and totally facilitated my career.

Q3: Is the new album (The Illusion of Progress) a departure for you?

Aaron Lewis: Not really. It’s where we’re at now. One of the misconceptions about me is that my lyrics are all dark and angry. The fact is that there’s a little twist in every song that kind of changes everything.

Q4:Is this your favorite record so far?

Aaron Lewis: It really is and, thankfully, the record before that was too. ... If we don’t feel like we’ve outdone ourselves and wrote a better record than the last while we’re in the studio, we’re not finished.

Q5: We read that "Rainy Day Parade" was the first song on which you've taken a political stance, is this true?

Aaron Lewis: If you mean political as in democrat versus republican, that’s not what I’ve taken the stance on. It’s just political as far as I’m really sick of listening to people complain about this country. Go anywhere else in the f*cking world and you’ll be glad to come back here.

Lewis lets us in on his greatest goals and what the future holds...

Q6: What else are you working on?

Aaron Lewis: All the way up to November [2007] I was out on a solo tour. For almost a year of the time we were gone I was out playing acoustically.

Q7: Are you still working on a solo record?

Aaron Lewis: No. I’m thinking about a solo record. I’m not very good at working on anything, but I have seven or eight songs in the can.

Q8: What are you most proud of in your career, and your personal life?

Aaron Lewis: The song I wrote for my daughter, Zoe Jane, off 14 Shades of Grey, and my three daughters.

Q9: Tell us about your most extravagant purchase?

Aaron Lewis: Probably my house, but it wasn’t a purchase; I built it. It took about five years.
