Here's an article that's pretty cool--it has some of the lyrics to Wannabe in it...never thought I'd see those in a Staind song.

Fuck Your Scenes Review: Staind - Staind

Genre: Alternative-Metal, Nu-Metal

It’s no doubt that Staind have been one of the most successful bands to come from the nu-metal genre, aside from Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit of course. And even though Staind slowly strayed further away from the nu-metal tag over the years, they’ve returned to embrace it. Which, is surprisingly a good thing because The Illusion of Progress was certainly not their best work.

Staind begins with an opening bass-line, something that most fans of Staind will remember from their single “Mudshovel.” The song goes on to not disappoint with impressive guitar riffs all throughout, and growls that reiterate the angry lyrics that Aaron Lewis has once returned to. The lead single off of the album, “Not Again,” could not have been any more representative of how Staind as a whole, is a throw-back album. It’s an extremely catchy song, that is able to be heavy, yet maintain an infectious melody at the same time. More growls, of course.

“Throw It All Away” is the band’s first ballad on the album, and couldn’t be better placed. As it follows one of the most immature songs that Staind has ever done; “Wannabe.” It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but in terms of song-writing; it’s very, very poor. But hey, at least it’s got a good guitar solo and instrumentals that don’t disappoint. The verses were clearly meant for Snoop Dogg, and I’m not sure what happened to him, but instead Aaron Lewis takes over the verses and raps awful lyrics like “I’m selling records, what is it that you do?//Sitting in your momma’s basement with a shih tzu//peanut butter on your dick//right hand going click, with your left hand giving you a rim job.” Again, the rhyming is good, and the chorus of the song is even better, but now you know what I mean.

It doesn’t take long after the rap-then-ballad punch to get back to what everyone expects from them: melody and heavy guitars. “Take a Breath” begins with a little soothing intro, before kicking in full-force and only slowing down for it’s melodic verses. Aaron’s vocals are able to truly shine on this song, from switching from melodic to screams without any sort of hesitation, delivering one of the best choruses on the album. “The Bottom” is the first song that the band released from the album, and the tuning of the opening guitar already signified that Staind was returning to their roots, and now here we are. This song (as well as many of the others) sounds like it could find it’s home on Dysfunction.

The last song I’m going to note here is “Something to Remind You.” A beautiful, slow song that ends the self-titled album on a high-note. The song is the true ballad of the album, with lyrics that will resonate in your head long after the song is finished. Undoubtedly one of the strongest points on the album, and in their entire discography now. Is that saying too much for a song that’s yet to hit the public ears? Probably. But, that’s not going to stop me from sticking by it. “Something to Remind You” is the first song written by Staind in awhile that has potential to bring tears to your eyes from the aesthetically beautiful melody of the guitar alone. Then you throw in lyrics like “So when the day comes and the sun won’t touch my face//tell the ones who care enough, that I finally left this place,” as well as “So this is it, I say goodbye//to this chapter of my everchanging life//and there’s mistakes, the path was long//and I’m sure I’ll answer for them when I’m gone” and you’ve got a song that’s no short of memorable. Top this off with Aaron Lewis’ soothing vocals, as well.

It’s very rare that when a band says “we’re going to return to our roots with this next album,” that they actually mean it, but Staind said it and they surely meant it. Every song, even the two ballads, will remind you of the old days. Before Staind started making songs like “All I Want” and just made really heavy, yet ever-so-melodic songs. If you’re a fan of heavier-rock, check this out. If you’re a fan of Staind’s older material, check this out. If you only like The Illusion of Progress, fuck off and stay away from this album, because you’re going to hate it more than I hate pooping blood (note: that’s never actually happened to me, but I assume I would hate it a lot). Simply put: Staind is back, and just as heavy - if not heavier - than they were ten years ago.

I guess I'll just have to listen to the song. At first I thought "wannabe" was gonna be awesome, but now I am scared to listen to it. If those lyrics are an indication as to what the whole song sounds like then it's gonna suck. Those lyrics really do suck. But who knows it may work with the song?
^^What Bryan said..
I refuse to believe those lyrics are legit.... the man who wrote those trashy lyrics can't possibly be the same man who wrote the lyrics for "Something To Remind You"...

If it is legit, it will be the only staind song I've ever had to skip over. The lyrical content is already suffering on the songs I've heard thus far; except for Something to remind you.

Yeah, the lyrics have been the only letdown for me so far on these tracks. Not Again's are OK, but the others have been pretty unimaginative. The music has been killer though, and Aaron's vox sound better than ever - singing & screaming. 2 for 3 isn't too shabby. I just can't believe that Aaron wouldn't put more effort into painting intricate lyrical landscapes like he has on BTC, 14SOG, ChV, & even TIOP.
Yeah...Open Your Eyes and all of 14SOG was really, really good writing. They all have been like you said, but those stand out to me as of now.
Yeah, 14SOG had, in my opinion, the best lyrics so far.
For me BTC has the best lyrical content and 14SOG a close second...im not slateing the new tracks but they seem really simple lyric wise, but anyway lets see what else is on offer when the album comes out..
Thanks.  Really looking forward to the album.  I am glad Snoop Dogg isn't on the album and hope Wannabe is still somewhat listenable.  I don't like the idea of Aaron rapping though, oh well.

I've thought this for a while, but it just seems like aaron is running out of stuff to sing about/sing angry about.

Like that whole article about them doing their parts in totally different areas and not coming together. It just seems like they made a record because they had to.

I think staind might be done soon. O well. It was a good run!

Yeah I'm thinking this is probably their last album. I think Aaron went country to see how it'd do to possibly see if he could make it without Staind, and I think he can. If anyone could cross over and rap a few lines on a song, it'd be Aaron, for sure. though the idea doesn't excite me..

Regardless, can't wait for Staind 7!

when i pop  in a Staind record i don't skip songs.........from what i've actually HEARD from "Wannabe" it isn't thier best work but it's better then alot of SHIT i hear these days so i'm gonna bump it faithfully.......fuck haters
