Amerikansk nyrock får ofta utstå mycket ont från kulturjournalister och musiktyckare, ändå är det svårt att avfärda ett band som Staind. Med över 15 miljoner sålda skivor är det en stor grupp på den internationella rock-scenen. Vi tog ett snack med sångaren Aaron Lewis inför deras spelning på Bandit Rock Awards i Stockholm.

Ni har släppt sex studioalbum och varit aktiva som grupp i över tio år, hur länge kommer ni att fortsätta?

- Till dess att folk inte vill höra oss längre, jag trodde aldrig att vi skulle hålla på så länge som vi faktiskt gjort. Men å andra sidan så gör vi det här för att vi har ett sånt behov av att göra musik. Och så har vi världens mest fantastiska fans.

Vad får er att fortsätta efter alla år som musiker och grupp?

- För mig personligen handlar det om att få ur mig massor av jobbiga saker. Att uttrycka mig själv.

Är det inte jobbigt att exponera sig själv i den utsträckning du gör då? Det är ju så många som lyssnar på er.

- Nej, det berör mig inte. Det är klart, jag hoppas ju på fina reaktioner från våra fans, både när vi spelar live och när de hör våra skivor. Men jag är inte beroende av det, det är en personlig grej, att kunna få ut massor av saker.

Känner du att ni utvecklas som grupp?

- Ja, verkligen. Den senaste skivan var ju en ganska stor vändning för oss som grupp. Men jag är inte säkert på att folk förstår det i stort. Vi har ingen kontroll över vilka låtar som väljs ut till radion. Så jag tycker inte att radio-hitsen är en rättvis representation av oss som musiker.

Ok, så det är viktigt för er att utvecklas musikaliskt?

- Ja, absolut. Annars skulle det inte vara någon poäng med det här. Det är viktigt att reflektera över det vi gör. Att alltid ha ambitionen att nästa skiva ska bli vår bästa.

Har ni utvecklats som live-artister också?

- Ja, framför allt sen jag började spela gitarr på scen med. Tidigare gjorde jag inte det, mest för att folk ville att jag skulle se ut och bete mig på ett sätt som jag själv inte alls tyckte kändes bekvämt. Men nu spelar jag under konserterna, samtidigt som jag sjunger. Det känns så mycket bekvämare.

Lyssnar ni i bandet på någon svensk musik?

- Ja, In Flames! De är så bra, väldigt schyssta också. Jag gillar deras musik, den är tung, de kan verkligen plocka fram rätt energi. Det där tunga.

Vad kan vi förvänta oss av er spelning på Tyrol?

- Renhet. När vi spelar finns inget som distraherar, det är fullt fokus på musiken. Vi är på många sätt motsatsen till ett band som Nickelback. Ingen scenshow, ingen rök, bara vi.

American nyrock often suffer much pain from the culture and music journalists think, yet it is difficult to dismiss a band Staind. With more than 15 million records sold, it is a large group on the international rock scene. We had a talk with singer Aaron Lewis before their performance at the Bandit Rock Awards in Stockholm.


You have released six studio albums and been active as a group for over ten years, how long will you continue?

- Until the people do not want to hear us anymore, I never thought we would go on as long as we actually did. But on the other hand we will do it here that we have a kind of need to make music. And we have the most amazing fans.

What makes you continue after all these years as a musician and the group?

- For me personally, it is about to get out of me a lot of hard things. To express myself.

Is not it hard to expose herself to the extent you do then? There are so many who listen to you.

- No, it concerns me not. It is clear, I hope, of course, on the financial reaction from our fans, both when we play live and when they hear our records. But I am not dependent on it, it's a personal thing, to get a lot of things.

Do you feel that you develop as a group?

- Yes, indeed. The last disc was a rather big excuse for us as a group. But I am not sure that people understand it in general. We have no control over which songs to be selected for the radio. So I do not think radio hits is a fair representation of us as musicians.

Ok, so it is important for you to evolve musically?

- Yes, absolutely. Otherwise it would not be any point in this. It is important to reflect on what we do. To always have the ambition to the next disc will be our best.

Have you developed as live performers as well?

- Yes, especially since I started playing guitar on stage with. Earlier I did not, most of the people wanted me to look and behave myself in a way which I myself do not like at all felt comfortable. But now I play in concerts, while I sing. It feels so much more comfortable.

Are you listening in the band at any Swedish music?

- Yes, In Flames! They are so good, very nice also. I like their music, it is heavy, they can really pick out the right energy. That heavy.

What can we expect of you playing in Tyrol?

- Purity. When we play is nothing to distract, it's full focus on the music. We are in many ways the opposite of a band Nickel Back. No stage show, no smoke, just us.
